Featuring a FREE raffle for romantic goodies and delicious "Audrey-tini" drink specials available at the snack bar! Get your love on at The Loft this Valentine's Day with a very romantic screening of the sparkling, Oscar-winning 1953 classic ROMAN HOLIDAY, starring Gregory Peck and the one-and-only Audrey Hepburn!
Winner of three ACADEMY AWARDS, including Best Actress, Best Screenplay and Best Costume Design! "A timeless, exuberant classic ... Witty, warm and beautifully filmed, it remains an unabashed romantic delight, with Audrey Hepburn particularly luminescent." - David Parkinson, EMPIRE MAGAZINE
The bubbly romantic comedy ROMAN HOLIDAY is the film that made the endlessly charming Audrey Hepburn a star, and from the moment she hit the screen as Princess Ann (her first-ever leading role, a role which also snagged the icon her only Best Actress Oscar) in this timeless classic, movie audiences around the world went weak in the knees.
In the film, Hepburn plays a famous, stressed-out European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she ditches her protective handlers and goes on a sight-seeing spree through the Eternal City, aided by tough-guy American journalist Joe Bradley (the always-charming Gregory Peck). Bradley, recognizing a hot news story, pretends that he doesn't recognize the world-renowned princess, in hopes of getting an exclusive interview, while his photographer pal Irving (Eddie Albert) attempts to sneak a much-coveted photo of the camera-shy beauty. Naturally, the world-weary Joe ends up falling head-over-heels in love with our heroine, and must wrestle with his secret betrayal as the romantic comedy sparks begin to fly.
William Wyler, director of such Oscar-winning hits as The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben- Hur, keeps the reverse-Cinderella fairy tale humming with charm and elegance, and this tasty champagne bubble of a film is great, glittering fun, with the gorgeous Rome locations adding enormously to the irresistible loveliness of it all. And of course, there is Audrey Hepburn, coolly unflappable whether decked out in full princess regalia or perched on the back of Gregory Peck's zippy motor scooter, effortlessly embodying an image of chic style and grace that would rule the world for the rest of the 1950s. It's certainly no coincidence she won the Oscar, as did veteran costume designer Edith Head. One of the greatest and most beloved of all romantic comedies, ROMAN HOLIDAY is an utterly sublime movie confection.

Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. See this lively tribute to the early days of cinema before you watch this year's Academy Awards telecast later in the evening on Sunday, February 26th!
How had a twenty-two-year–old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come?
In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.
I know it was in the picture. I made the picture and now the cow’s getting paid and I’m not!
Following VINCENT IN BRIXTON and THE REPORTER, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes PRIMO and STANLEY – returns to play Jacob.
